Luxury Scuba Adventure in Bonaire: A Divers' Paradise

Have you ever dreamed of embarking on a scuba diving adventure in a tropical paradise?

Located in the southern Caribbean, Bonaire is known for its crystalline waters, spectacular coral reefs, and awe-inspiring marine life. Part of the ABC islands and a Dutch territory, this Caribbean gem combines natural beauty with a touch of European charm. Known as one of the world's best shore diving destinations, Bonaire offers an unparalleled underwater experience that will leave you breathless. It boasts more than 80 marked dive sites, which are easily accessible from the shore, making it one of the most convenient diving destinations in the world.

This year I traveled to Bonaire with my travel bestie to pursue my Advanced Certification in Scuba Diving. With eager anticipation, we embarked on our training under the guidance of seasoned instructors who shared their expertise and passion for the underwater realm. Over three exhilarating days, we delved deeper into the art of scuba diving, mastering skills and techniques that would open doors to new exploration horizons.

Join me as I recount the beautiful dive sites we explored, the extraordinary marine life we encountered, and the hidden gems we discovered on this luxury scuba adventure in Bonaire!

Where to Stay

During my stay in Bonaire, I had the pleasure of experiencing the exquisite luxury of Harbour Village Beach Club. From the moment I arrived, it was evident why this resort has garnered a loyal following. In fact, I encountered three couples who had visited the resort a remarkable 8 to 10 times, and it was easy to see why they kept coming back. This island and resort had captured their hearts, and I knew that I, too, would be returning in the future.

The Amenities

One major factor that drew me to Harbour Village Beach Club was its vast array of complimentary resort inclusions. My journey began with round-trip airport transfers, allowing a seamless transition from the airport to the resort. Once settled, I was delighted to find that Wi-Fi was included, ensuring we could stay connected throughout our stay.

One of the highlights of Harbour Village Beach Club was the access to the Kasa Coral pool and spa. Here, I indulged in moments of pure relaxation, basking in the tranquility of these stunning pool areas. For those seeking a more active experience, the fitness center offers state-of-the-art equipment to cater to your exercise needs. The resort also provided complimentary use of kayaks and paddleboards, allowing us to explore the surrounding waters at our leisure.

The resort's private beach, complete with lounge chairs and hammocks, provided a haven of serenity where I could unwind and soak up the sun. Its tranquil and peaceful ambiance made it my go-to spot for relaxation. The beach's serene atmosphere, coupled with its crystal-clear waters, made it an ideal place for snorkeling. I reveled in the opportunity to explore the underwater wonders right off the beach, immersing ourselves in the vibrant marine life that Bonaire is renowned for.

The Diving

As a diving enthusiast, I was thrilled to discover that the resort offered concierge diving service by Great Adventures Bonaire. Their expertise and attentiveness ensured that our diving experiences were seamless and unforgettable. Plus, the presence of Great Adventures Bonaire's Dive Shop on-site was a major convenience. As a PADI-certified dive shop, they offered a range of services that catered to divers of all levels. I appreciated the concierge service provided by the dive shop, which included assembling and cleaning our gear after each day of diving, even if you brought your own equipment.

Depending on the selected package, guests are treated to six or eleven boat dives during their stay, allowing for incredible underwater exploration. Additionally, unlimited shore diving was included, granting us the freedom to dive at our leisure. For those needing rental gear or looking to enhance their diving skills, the dive shop had a wide selection of equipment available for rent. They also offered dive classes for purchase, providing an opportunity for us to pursue our Advanced Open Water Certification during our vacation.

The Service

The service at Harbour Village Beach Club was truly exceptional. From the warm greetings at the front desk to the attentive bellhops, the friendly and personable staff made us feel like valued guests throughout our stay. The housekeeping team ensured our room was immaculate, and the dining staff made every meal a delightful experience.

The Food

While the resort has only one restaurant, La Balandra Restaurant & Bar, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. I discovered some personal favorites, including mouthwatering burgers, succulent tenderloin sliders, delectable fritters, crispy calamari, and irresistible French toast. The refreshing Mango Colados and freshly squeezed orange juice became our go-to beverages, perfectly complementing our dining experiences.

Sustainability

Harbour Village Beach Club's commitment to sustainable practices resonated deeply with us. The resort takes great pride in protecting the marine ecosystems that make Bonaire such a unique destination. Their dedication to sustainability can be seen in their initiatives and efforts to preserve the natural beauty of the island. We were impressed by their commitment and were inspired to learn more about their practices through their website.

What to Do

Bonaire, with its breathtaking underwater world, offers a plethora of opportunities for diving and snorkeling. While my friend and I were thrilled to have received our Advanced Open Water Certification during our vacation, we also made sure to explore the island's diverse range of attractions and experiences.

Diving

To prepare for our diving adventure, we completed the comprehensive 6-8 hour online training provided by PADI before our trip. This allowed us to maximize our time in Bonaire for the practical aspect of our certification. Once on the island, we eagerly embarked on our five required dives, each designed to enhance our diving skills and expand our underwater knowledge. From mastering underwater navigation to achieving peak performance buoyancy, we delved into various specialties, including fish identification, night diving, and a captivating deep dive. These dives not only challenged us but also revealed the fascinating marine life that thrives in Bonaire's waters.

Throughout our diving excursions, we had the privilege of exploring some of Bonaire's most renowned dive spots. The iconic 1000 Steps welcomed us with its vibrant coral formations and an abundance of marine species. Something Special, especially during our thrilling night dive, captivated us with its mysterious allure. The famous Salt Pier and Bruce's Rappel showcased the beauty of the underwater world, while Angel City left us in awe with its breathtaking coral gardens. Knife, Joanne's Sunchi, Bloodlet, La Dania's Leap, Kalli's Reef, and Petrie's Pillar were all captivating in their own unique ways, offering encounters with a wide array of marine life.

One of the most memorable moments of our diving experience was embarking on my first-ever night dive. Initially apprehensive, I quickly realized that the nocturnal underwater realm held a unique charm. As we descended into the darkness, the beam of our dive lights revealed a hidden world teeming with activity. The sightings of green moray eels, octopuses, lionfish, and the graceful movements of hawksbill turtles were highlights of this unforgettable adventure.

Other Activities

While diving remained our primary focus, we did find time to engage in other activities on the island. One standout experience was landsailing, which we highly recommend to anyone seeking a thrill-filled adventure. The wind in our hair as we raced across the open landscapes brought immense joy and excitement.

Additionally, I recommend venturing on a guided North and South Tour, exploring the island's captivating landscapes and scenic viewpoints. Furthermore, visiting the Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire will allow you to connect with the island's wildlife, while Washington National Park provides a glimpse into Bonaire's natural beauty. Lastly, the Salt Pyramids and Salt Pier give travelers a peek into the historical significance of the salt industry on the island.

In the midst of your explorations, make sure to indulge in the unique flavors of Bonaire. A sunset dinner cruise offers a romantic and picturesque setting, accompanied by delectable cuisine. Plus, a visit to the Cadushy Distillery will introduce you to the intriguing world of cactus-based alcohol.
