Cascade Wellness Resort Lagos Review: A Wellness Escape in the Algarve

Sometimes called the ‘California of Europe’, the Algarve is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets! Golden cliffs, water that turns every shade of blue depending on the hour, laid-back surf culture, and roughly 300 days of sunshine a year – it’s a destination that deserves a spot on every traveler’s bucket list.
While the Algarve is set along the coastline, it’s not only beaches you’ll find here. Rugged mountains, stunning vineyards, and spectacular nature reserves await those who aren’t afraid to get off the beaten path.
Sounds tempting? The tricky part is deciding where to base yourself, because the towns along this coast vary wildly in mood. If you have limited time to explore, Lagos is one of the best places to be. Small enough to walk, old enough to be interesting, and sitting right beside the most dramatic stretch of coastline in the country.
That’s also where you’ll find Cascade Wellness Resort by Domes, a five-star stay overlooking the Atlantic near Ponta da Piedade, under three hours by car from Lisbon.
We spent four nights there for our ninth wedding anniversary, so here’s my honest review.

Atmosphere
The setting does most of the work here. Cascade looks out over the Atlantic near Ponta da Piedade, where limestone cliffs rise about 20 metres above the water. The coastal trail also runs right past the property, so there’s really no excuse to skip your daily walk!
The resort itself looks more like a Portuguese village than a hotel, with low terracotta and ochre buildings, tiled roofs, and plenty of green space between them.
Everything else is close by, too. Praia do Porto de Mós aka the beach is a fifteen-minute walk away, or less than five minutes by car, and Lagos Old Town is close enough that we went there for dinner most evenings.
Our Tip: Walk the Ponta da Piedade trail early. The light is better, the path is quieter, and you’ll have the clifftop viewpoints largely to yourself.
Accommodations
Cascade is split into five wings, each named after a region Portuguese navigators sailed to: Asia, Africa, South America, Europe, and Portugal. The rooms in each wing take design cues from their respective regions.
During our anniversary trip, we stayed in a Double Room with Ocean and Pool Views, and it was lovely, with just the right amount of space. Our room had a bathtub and a walk-in rain shower, a large wardrobe, luxury toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, evening turndown service, and a balcony big enough to enjoy romantic Portuguese evenings!
If you’re traveling with family or a group of friends, Cascade Wellness Resort Lagos also offers apartments and private villas. These are great options for longer stays, as they come equipped with a kitchen and other useful amenities.
Restaurants and Bars

The Algarve is known for its fantastic restaurant scene, so trying a few spots in Lagos is a must. That said, if you’d rather enjoy all your meals at the hotel, you won’t be disappointed either. There’s plenty of great food to be had right on the property!
Mundi: Breakfast here is excellent, with an omelette station, pancakes, French toast, pastries, fresh juices and sparkling wine. In the evening, it becomes a themed buffet with menus rotating through European, Asian, Mediterranean, BBQ, South American, Portuguese, and Algarve-inspired cuisine.
The Gastropub: The perfect place to introduce yourself to Portuguese cuisine. Order the Portuguese steak with potatoes – it’s delicious!
Antonio’s: Italian, best for lunch or an early dinner. Get the pizza and finish with the gelato – after all that hiking and walking, it’s the best thing to do.
Lighthouse Bar: Open 10:30 a.m. to midnight, with signature cocktails, snacks and live music most evenings.
Guests at the resort can also take advantage of room service. We tried the specialty burger and can testify it is exactly what you want on a night when you’ve decided not to leave the room.
Other Restaurants in Lagos Worth Checking Out
Luca’s Rooftop: Make sure to try the Sirloin Black Angus steak, the shrimp and lobster tortelli, and the cheesecake – they’re cooked to perfection!
Mirandus: Sunset dining inside a hotel, with a cozy bar to move to afterwards. The silver bass special, the brownie and the lemon tart were all delicious.
The Green Room: Craving some Mexican food? As a fellow Texan, I can tell you the enchiladas and burritos are top-tier.
Antonio Restaurante: Portugal is known to be an excellent seafood destination, and Antonio Restaurante is where you can experience some of that magic. Get the oven octopus and the prawns, and save room for the honey pudding.
Our Tip: Don’t leave Portugal without trying Bacalhau à Brás, the salt cod dish that turns up everywhere once you start looking for it.
The Spa
Lagos is the kind of place that naturally keeps you active. Between the clifftop trails, beach walks and boat trips, there’s so much to explore! That also means that by late afternoon, you’ve usually earned a sit-down. Thankfully, Cascade Wellness Resort Lagos has its own spa, which is perfect for winding down. We visited the spa every day during our four-night stay and were really impressed!
The spa includes a sauna, a steam room, a jacuzzi, an ice fountain, and a heated outdoor pool. After spending some time here, you’ll come out feeling like you never climbed anything! For those who want to enjoy additional pampering, there are four treatment rooms available.
Just keep in mind that the spa is for guests aged 16 and over (except between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., when children are allowed at the pool).
Things to Do in Lagos

For a town this size, Lagos has a surprising amount to offer. Most of what you’ll do, though, happens on the water. The cliffs here are riddled with caves, arches and little beaches you simply can’t reach on foot.
During our four night stay, we did the sunset sail, and it was the highlight of the whole trip. We went with Bom Dia Boat Trips on a traditional Portuguese sailing boat. The service was wonderful and the sunset was unreal. If you book one thing in Lagos, book this.
The Benagil Cave is another must-do. It’s a sea cave with a near-perfect circular opening in its roof, carved out of limestone that’s roughly twenty million years old, and you can reach it by speedboat or kayak from Lagos in about 45 minutes to an hour.
Closer to home, Praia do Porto de Mós is a short walk from the resort, and the Ponta da Piedade trail has 182 steps down to the water if you fancy the climb back up. A surf lesson is worth adding to the list too. The Algarve’s surf culture is a big part of its appeal, and there are plenty of schools around Lagos that cater to complete beginners.
Our Tip: The rules changed in August 2024, and you can no longer land on the beach inside Benagil or swim in. Go between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. from May to October, when the sunlight comes straight through the opening.
Final Thoughts
There’s a reason people keep coming back to the Algarve. The coastline is extraordinary, the food is delicious, and everything is close enough together that you never lose half a day to driving.
When it comes to choosing a base for your Algarve adventure, Cascade is hard to beat. The coast path begins at the edge of the resort, the grounds are green and peaceful, and between the pools, the spa and the restaurants there’s plenty to fill the days you don’t feel like going anywhere.
So, if you want a week of cliff walks, long dinners and a thermal circuit somewhere in between, this is a lovely place to do it. We can’t wait to come back!
