In recent years, Lisbon has become something of a tourist hotspot. The coastal capital attracts 4.5 million annual visitors, many drawn to its charming old town, impressive historic ruins, and, of course, those delicious pastéis de nata. With this popularity has come a rise in big hotel chains. But if you’re looking for something with a little more character, our advice is to look into boutique hotels. Luckily, Lisbon is dotted with top-notch luxury hotels, so there are plenty of excellent options to choose from!
As someone who lives in Lisbon, I (Maranatha) get to experience the city’s charm every day, and I’ve also had the chance to stay in and explore many of its most beautiful hotels. Here are the best luxury hotels in Lisbon that combine stunning design, exceptional service, and excellent location.
Valverde Lisboa Hotel & Garden

If you’re looking for a luxury hotel in Lisbon in the heart of the action, it doesn’t get more central than Valverde Lisboa Hotel & Garden. Nestled on the main thoroughfare of Avenida da Liberdade, the hotel is just a six-minute ride from the airport. The 19th-century boulevard is also where you’ll find some of the city’s biggest fashion names, along with the trendiest cafes and restaurants.
Its prime location is only part of the Valverde hotel’s allure. The premium accommodation first opened its doors in 2014. With just 22 rooms, it quickly gained a reputation as one of the city’s best luxury hotels. In 2021, the property underwent a significant expansion project, during which 26 new rooms were added to the mix, plus a gorgeous spa and restaurant.

At Valverde Hotel Lisbon, every detail is carefully curated. Its classic, elegant style makes you feel like you’ve traveled to a charming New York or London townhouse. Combining contemporary furniture and art with vintage antiques, the accommodation is the perfect blend of old and new. A major highlight of the hotel is its temperature-controlled outdoor pool, a rare find in Lisbon.
While the design and location of the Valverde Hotel Lisbon are five-star, what truly sets it apart is the impeccable service. During our stay, the staff went above and beyond at every turn.
When our AC stopped working late at night, maintenance came immediately, and when it couldn’t be fixed, we were moved to a new room with our luggage already transferred for us. On another day, when we had an early tour and couldn’t make breakfast, the team arranged for it to be delivered to our room right on time. Few hotels truly feel like a home away from home, but Valverde Hotel Lisbon certainly does! You can read more about my experience at Valverde in my Portugal Luxury Trip Recap and Review.
Pro Tip: Make sure to download WhatsApp to easily reach the hotel staff if you need anything during your stay.
Food and drinks

Craving something delicious? The Valverde Hotel is home to the Bougain Restaurant & Garden Bar. With Mediterranean-inspired cuisine, the restaurant offers delicious classics and fresh cocktails – perfect on a hot day.
Breakfast here was complimentary and absolutely delicious. Guests are welcomed with the option of a refreshing mimosa or even a glass of champagne – a lovely touch that sets the tone for a leisurely morning. After that, you can enjoy a buffet of pastries, fruit, cheeses, meats, and fresh juices. Hot dishes like omelets, pancakes, and eggs Benedict can also be ordered à la carte.
Pro Tip: In the evening, the restaurant is perfect for a nightcap. It’s also where you’ll redeem your welcome drink.
Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa

Hospitality is a hallmark of Portuguese culture. There’s nothing that locals love more than sharing their heritage. To experience the true warmth and hospitality of Lisbon, consider booking a stay at Tivoli Liberdade Lisboa. The hotel, which opened its doors in 1933, is set on the same boulevard as Hotel Valverde. Staying here means you’ll be just a short walk away from the city’s most iconic districts like Chiado and Baixa.
As soon as you enter the hotel, you’ll be impressed by the gold-and-turquoise lobby. But the rest of this twinkling property is equally gorgeous. Rooms and common areas here are designed to capture the essence of the 1950s, while still offering modern conveniences. Think soothing palettes of white, blue, and brown, stunning custom linens, and oversized bathrooms. Naturally, the higher your room category, the more space and perks you’ll enjoy.

If it’s pampering you’re after, head to the Anantara Spa, which features renowned brands like Biologique Recherche and Natura Bissé. The spa includes a private dry sauna (complimentary but reservation-only) and a range of treatments available at an extra cost. On the same floor, guests also have access to a 24-hour fitness club. Plus, in the summer, you can take advantage of the outdoor pool area (often with live music).
Food and drinks

The hotel offers guests three dining options. Cervejaria Liberdade focuses mainly on fish, seafood, and traditional flavors, while SEEN by Olivier Restaurant and Bar is the perfect place to enjoy contemporary cuisine with Japanese and Mediterranean influences. Thanks to its sweeping city views, it’s also an ideal spot to enjoy a well-deserved martini (or one of the bar’s signature drinks) after sightseeing in Lisbon.
For wine lovers, the 1933 Wine & Spirits Collection by Garrafeira Nacional offers an exceptional selection of bottles in a refined setting.
Pro Tip: For dinner, make a reservation early, as the restaurant fills up quickly.
Memmo Príncipe Real

The best way to experience Lisbon is to venture off the beaten path. If you’re looking for a stunning hotel that’s slightly away from the hustle and bustle, Memmo Príncipe Real might be the best option. The luxurious hotel is located in the neighborhood known as Principe Real – a favorite among locals, which has quickly become one of the city’s trendiest spots.
Perched on a hilltop at the end of a quiet street, Memmo Príncipe Real features 41 sleek rooms and a delicious restaurant. Here, you can experience contemporary elegance that’s deeply rooted in Portuguese heritage. Earthy tones, natural woodwork, and the famed blue-and-white Portuguese tiles – every detail makes an impression. In fact, I’m pretty sure you’ll live nearly as comfortably as the prince after whom this stunning hotel is named.

Many rooms feature balconies or terraces, some even with outdoor fireplaces, but the best choice is a city-view room, where you’ll enjoy breathtaking views over Lisbon.
Food and drinks
Food is another highlight at Memmo Príncipe Real. Head to Café Príncipe Real to sample yummy Portuguese classics (the Portuguese fish and seafood soup is raved about) and soak in glorious views over the city.
Breakfast comes as a buffet with fresh pastries and breads, fruits, cereals, and yogurts, alongside a menu offering eggs in all shapes and sizes.
More luxury hotels in Lisbon worth discovering
Lisbon’s luxury hotel scene is so rich that it’s hard to narrow the list down to just a few favorites. If you have an opportunity, consider staying at one of these hotels as well:
Santiago de Alfama – Boutique Hotel: Tucked into Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood, this hotel feels like a secret hideaway — I love how its centuries-old walls hold so much history, yet the interiors feel warm, stylish, and unmistakably Portuguese.
Altis Grand Hotel: While larger than the other hotels I’ve mentioned, the Altis Grand doesn’t fail to impress with its sweeping city views from the rooftop bar and a spa that’s perfect after long days exploring Lisbon on foot.
The Ivens Hotel: This one is pure fun — inspired by 19th-century explorers, the interiors burst with character and color. The on-site restaurants are amazing too!
Final Thoughts
Over the course of the last few years, Lisbon has undergone something of a makeover. There’s so much to do and experience here that it’s no longer enough to book just a weekend stay (although even a day in the beautiful city is sure to leave an impression). In fact, chefs from around the world are opening fresh restaurants, emerging artists and designers are filling new shops, and events seem to pop up everywhere.
The luxury hotel scene in Lisbon is no exception. So, if you’re planning a trip to Portugal’s capital, don’t just think about where you’ll go and what you’ll eat (though that list will be long). Think also about where you’ll stay — because in Lisbon, there are so many great options to try!
