Fresh off the gangway from our second sailing on Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady, I'm eager to share my thoughts on this incredible itinerary. If you've been intrigued by the idea of sailing with Virgin Voyages, but haven't yet taken the plunge, this review is for you.
Virgin Voyages has already situated itself among the ranks of cruising elites, despite being a relative newcomer to the cruising scene. Expertly merging party vibes with indulgent relaxation, this adults-only cruise line has set out to redefine the way we think about cruising. To get the full scoop on why we think this cruise line stands out, check out our blog, The Top 5 Reasons To Go On A Virgin Voyages Cruise.
Embarking on the Scarlet Lady for a second time, we found ourselves once again dazzled by the cruising experience Virgin has cultivated. This journey’s itinerary, “French Daze & Ibiza Nights," lived up to every ounce of our expectations. Setting sail from Barcelona, Spain, this splendid 7-day voyage transported us to some of the Mediterranean's hottest locales. We indulged in decadent wining and dining in Marseille, embraced Cannes' luxurious Riviera glamor, savored the sun-kissed grace of Palma de Mallorca on a catamaran, and finally, danced until dawn in Ibiza's world-renowned clubs.
So, whether you're well-acquainted with the cruising community or considering coming aboard for the first time, let our blog be your guide to the world of Virgin Voyages.
Let's get into it!

Preboarding
Our stay in Barcelona at The ONE Hotel was an unforgettable experience, and it's safe to say it has set a new benchmark for luxury accommodation in Spain. This 5-star boutique hotel, with its compelling combination of elegance and contemporary flair, has been welcoming guests for seven years. The accommodations here have a strong art influence woven into their 88 rooms across 10 distinct categories.
From the moment I checked in until my departure, the service was impeccable. The spa is open from 11 am to 9 pm daily, with exclusivity for adults after 4 pm. It features a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, and a tranquil relaxation area. The rooftop, my favorite spot, offers a stunning pool and restaurant where you can relax and unwind against the backdrop of Barcelona's most breathtaking sunsets. Plus, it's open until 1 am.
Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the 24/7 gym access, and the around-the-clock room service caters to any late-night cravings or breakfast-in-bed desires. Should you need any assistance planning your day or making reservations, the concierge desk is readily available from 7 am to 11 pm. The inclusion of a complimentary à la carte breakfast adds a level of exclusivity and comfort, while the option to dine in for dinner (at an additional cost) offers flexibility to your evening plans. For those planning a visit with family or a large group, the availability of rooms with connecting doors is a game-changer.Â
Overall, the experience at The ONE Hotel Barcelona was so remarkable that I not only plan to return but also recommend it to all my clients seeking luxurious accommodation in Barcelona.
Atmosphere
Stepping aboard in Barcelona, the atmosphere on the Scarlet Lady instantly reminded us why Virgin Voyages stands out. The ship itself is a floating boutique hotel with a sleek, contemporary design that oozes casual luxury and vibrant energy. The crew, always friendly and attentive, provided a level of service that made us feel both pampered and excited to participate in everything on offer. The absence of youngsters ensured that all amenities, activities, and experiences cater specifically to adults, allowing us to engage in grown-up fun with reckless abandon.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Scarlet Lady focuses on the overall experience, making each moment seamless, from the efficient check-in process to the thoughtful touch of freely available WiFi. It's also a sanctuary for solo travelers, with a variety of social activities and communal dining options facilitating connections among guests, alongside specially designed solo cabins that waive the single supplement fee.
Accommodations
As residents of a Sea Terrace cabin, we found it snug yet undeniably charming. Decorated with modern furnishings and packed with practical touches such as plenty of outlets and iPad-controlled lights and curtains, we thoroughly enjoyed coming back to our suite at the end of a long day. Also, we lovvvveed our balcony! You can't beat sipping hot coffee while taking in those ocean views or relaxing in your hammock after a wild night out. However, in hindsight, we wish we would have opted for an XL Sea Terrace or a superior category for a little extra leeway, especially in the bathroom. So, for those seeking a bit more stretch room while freshening up or enjoying a soothing shower, the upgrade comes highly recommended.Â
Need extra towels or a second pitcher of water to quench your thirst after a day filled with adventures? The Scarlet Lady eagerly welcomes personalization requests. Just ask housekeeping, and they'll be more than happy to accommodate.
Pro Tip: Never let wrinkled clothing dampen your style onboard. You can always request a clothing steamer to keep your look on point. After all, style and sass are virtues celebrated by Virgin Voyages!Â
Food & Drink
The Wake is the go-to spot for fine dining aboard the Scarlet Lady. The hanger steak, bone marrow, double-baked potatoes, and creamed spinach served were all delightful, but for me, the star of the show was the clam chowder. We also strongly recommend finishing off your dinner with the lemon cheesecake. The Wake is also our favorite place for brunch with a to-die-for soft shell crab benedict, perfectly complemented by an unlimited $25pp mimosa service.
Next on the hit list was Extra Virgin, the ship's Italian restaurant. Do yourself a favor and try the mini meatballs and the unbelievably good potato gnocchi, still my favorite dish the second time around! Pro Tip:Â Don't forget the gelato; its delightful taste was the talk of the ship. I missed out, and I regret it!
We got lucky this time around with a rez during Pink Agave’s After Dark party. The DJ added so much fun to the already electric atmosphere, rivaled by a toast from the manager who ordered the whole restaurant a round of shots on the house! While I relished the esquites (grilled corn), enchilada de pollo (chicken enchiladas), and Bistec Marinero en Escabeche (ribeye steak), it was the bread pudding that stole my heart. But honestly, everything we ate here was perfection, so I don't think you can go wrong!
Gunbae, the ship's vibrant Korean BBQ, presented communal dining, fun drinking games, and delicious dishes like dakgangjeong (crispy spicy chicken), fried rice, squid, short ribs, and divine pork belly. We think this would be a great restaurant to start the cruise with if you are looking to make friends while onboard.
The adventure continued onto the Test Kitchen. Their 6-course chef-inspired mystery menu (which interestingly changes every five days) was a fun experience, with the Venison & Chocolate Cake being my favorites on this sailing. Pro-tip: Add the cocktail pairing to elevate your fine dining adventure.
For quick bites, The Galley (an open-hall dining concept) was my go-to. Their omelet was the perfect kickstart to my morning, and the french fries from the burger bar became my favorite snack. On this sailing, we were treated to an Asian Market Night hosted by The Galley! All the food stations were transformed into stalls serving different Asian cuisines. The entire floor was decked out in Asian Market decor that truly immersed us in the theme.Â
After a night out in Ibiza, room service AKA ShipEats brought the comfort of home straight to my door. A delicious Bolognese proved the perfect nightcap, seamlessly ordered via the app. Keep in mind, you can waive the delivery charge as long as you order a chargeable item like a glass of wine or specialty coffee.
And last but by no means least was The Pizza Place and their daily pizza specials. Their "Pretty Fly for a White Pie" was a delightful indulgence, and my insider tip: try it with ranch dressing for a tasty flavor twist.
Pro Tip: Get your dinner reservations as early as possible. In case you miss that, don't stress, as onboard reservations can be made at the Shore Excursions desk on the first day. If you'd like an early dinner despite a later reservation, pop by the restaurant at your preferred time – as long as reservations aren’t full, they can usually accommodate.
Bars
The Sip Bar was where champagne dreams came true. Their live music and the irresistible St. Louis Champagne made it the ideal spot to relax before or after dinner. On The Rocks was my favorite bar for drinks paired with delightful entertainment.Â
Drink Recommendation: The Entertainer. The perfect blend of vanilla vodka, passion fruit, lime, and sparkling wine.
ExcursionsÂ
Barcelona
Sagrada Familia Small Group Guided Tour
No visit to Barcelona is complete without witnessing the architectural marvel that is the Sagrada Familia. We joined a skip-the-line guided tour to bypass the queue and head straight into the heart of the iconic cathedral, which was well worth it. With completion projected for 2026, each visit is a glimpse into history in the making.
Barcelona Tapas & Wine Experience Small Group
Next, I ate my way through Barcelona’s celebrated food scene with an intimate tapas and wine tour. Guided by a local, we explored the city’s top tapas bars, indulging in authentic Catalan cuisine from Iberian ham to the deceptively simple "pan con tomate". Each dish was paired with an impeccable selection of regional wines. I felt this tour was an amazing way to blend history, culture, and culinary exploration into one.
Tablao de Carmen Flamenco Show with Tasting Menu or Dinner
Highly Recommended
The passion of Andalusian flamenco at Barcelona's Tablao de Carmen was an electrifying experience. With options for tapas, a three-course meal, or a VIP dinner with wine, you can choose the experience that suits you best (we loved the three-course meal). Wandering through the Spanish Village after the show offered a peaceful contrast, showcasing Spain’s traditional architecture. This was our favorite excursion, and I can't wait to recommend this experience to every client who visits Barcelona.
Casa Batllo
Before boarding the ship, we visited Casa Batlló, one of GaudÃ's architectural treasures in Barcelona. The architecture was not just breathtaking but truly seemed to bring stone and glass to life. I look forward to exploring GaudÃ's other houses on future visits.
Pro Tip: During peak times it can be a tad challenging to snag a quick taxi or Uber in Barcelona. A little extra time in your schedule will help you avoid any unnecessary stress.
MarseilleÂ
Mousset Estate Wine Tasting & Avignon on Your Own
We took a comfortable coach through vine-clad landscapes to reach the quaint town of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Famed for its wines since Pope Clement V cultivated the first vineyards in the 1300s, I savored a wine tasting that was pure French bliss. I give this experience a well-earned 10/10 recommendation for its beautiful views, exceptional wines, and delectable cheese pairings.
After the wine tasting, we had some time to explore the charming town of Avignon. Our guide pointed out some hidden gems and history of the city before setting us loose for a few hours to do as we pleased. While in the city, a stop at Le Château Du Bois is mandatory for lavender lovers. Packed with exquisite soaps and toiletries imbued with the fragrance of Provence, make sure to snag a selection for yourself and your loved ones. La Truffiere is also a must, with free tastings and great souvenirs for purchase. Optional, yet highly enriching, is the tour of the Palais des Papes.
Cannes
Classic Cars & Monte Carlo’s Racing Circuit
For any traveler making their way to Cannes, the Classic Cars & Monte Carlo’s Racing Circuit excursion is a must-do for car aficionados and thrill-seekers alike. This outing perfectly blends the elegance of Monaco with the adrenaline rush of the racetrack. I loved seeing the F1 circuit and the cars from Prince Rainier’s collection! After the museum, we had free time to explore Monaco. Our little group had an amazing lunch at Cafe Milano, with a bacon cheeseburger and fries that were 10/10. We had some delicious cocktails too! Post-lunch, we resumed our tour and stopped at the famous Monte Carlo. We headed to the cocktail bar just left of the entrance where they offered James Bond themed cocktails.Â
Pro Tip: If Monte Carlo's casino is on your agenda you'll need your passport for entry. Don’t forget to get that passport stamped!
Palma de MallorcaÂ
Luxury Catamaran Sailing Tour
I knew we wanted a smaller group experience so we decided to book this excursion via Viator, and it was FABULOUS! Designed for 10-12 guests, our catamaran had only ten people on board, which was perfect for our group of six. This setup not only provided an intimate experience but also allowed us to make some new friends.
Our trip started with sparkling wine and a selection of delicious Spanish tapas as we headed down the coast. We opted to indulge in one of the bar packages, which we felt was definitely worth the cost, thanks to their generous pours.
The tour was everything we hoped, creating the perfect setting to swim in the stunning turquoise waters and simply soak in the sun and sea views.
Pro Tip: Bring along a waterproof phone case, as you’ll want to capture the stunning scenery and fun moments from the water.
Ibiza
In Ibiza, rather than booking excursions through Virgin, we elected to discover the island's delights on our own. Virgin provided complimentary shuttles to downtown Ibiza, running every 20 minutes until the early hours of 4 a.m., which was exceedingly convenient. When it came to roaming around, aside from Uber, we used Taxi Click. Its app-based service is quick and reliable, reminding me very much of Uber's ease of use.
For dinner, we decided on Ohana Ibiza, whose outdoor casual ambiance was perfect for a night out with friends. If you ever get the chance to visit, the must-eats include the carpaccio, ribs, Wagyu burger, steak tataki, and of course, the paella.
Later we ventured to Swag Nightclub. I must confess, I regret this choice. The music was excessively loud, the acoustics were off, and the bar was disappointingly limited (I couldn't even get a proper cocktail). In hindsight, we should have joined the crowd at Hi Ibiza to see Calvin Harris perform. We’ve heard only stellar reviews, and it's rated as the top nightclub for a reason.
The following day brought redemption for Ibiza in the form of our visit to Tanit Beach Club. Hands down, I can't recommend this place enough! The vibes were cool, relaxed, and casual, and the perfect way to end our trip. With a beautiful beachfront, exquisite food & cocktails, combined with entertainment including a DJ, violinist, and aerialist performers, Tanit delivered an unparalleled experience. To top it all off the service here was above and beyond. Our server was attentive throughout our stay and ended our visit with complimentary goodbye shots!
For those interested in visiting, reserving a day bed in advance is a must. Priced at $150 for a bed and $50 for a lounge chair it was worth every penny. While the beds can accommodate up to 4 guests, I'd suggest a maximum of 3 for comfort.
