Barcelona Highlights: What to Do, See And Taste in 3 Days

Barcelona city

Set along the sparkling Mediterranean sea, Barcelona is a destination that suits every type of traveler. The city in northeastern Spain is a melting pot of culture that offers everything you could wish for – remarkable architecture, verdant green spaces, world-renowned museums that showcase the works of artistic legends, and wonderful markets full of local produce.

If it’s the sun you’re chasing, you shall receive plenty of it. But there are many exciting indoor activities, as well! In fact, just like Antoni Gaudí’s color-pop architecture, there’s never a dull moment in the stunning Catalan city.

Last summer, I had the fantastic opportunity to stay in Barcelona for 3 days before sailing with Virgin Voyages. From awe-inspiring sights to world-class dining, here’s a look at what made my Barcelona stay truly unforgettable.

Why Visit Barcelona?

Why visit Barcelona

According to official figures, in 2024, 15.5 million tourists stayed overnight in Barcelona. Interestingly, travelers from the United States represent 14.7% of tourists who visit the Catalan capital, only behind those from the rest of Spain. So, what makes the cosmopolitan city such a popular choice for adventurers all around the globe?

Part of Barcelona’s charm lies in its incredible diversity. Unlike other travel destinations, Barcelona caters to different types of tastes.

If your idea of a dream vacation is going on a museum crawl, you can get your daily dose of culture at the Picasso Museum, catch a concert at the Palau de la Música Catalana de Sant Pere (the building has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site!), or enjoy festivals like the Sónar.

Of course, you can learn about the city’s culture simply by wandering around its colorful streets, filled with impressive architecture. In addition to Gaudí, you can discover striking Gothic cathedrals, magnificent Modernisme creations, and other avant-garde projects.

Prefer to spend some time in nature? There are 4.2 km of golden sandy beaches only 10 minutes from Barcelona’s center! Moreover, the city is full of beautiful parks and gardens that offer a fantastic opportunity to embrace the great outdoors (and even snap some lovely content for the ‘Gram). As you can see, in Barcelona, there’s something for everyone!

Accommodations

There are many lovely hotels in Barcelona, which isn’t surprising, considering the staggering amount of tourism. On my most recent visit to the Catalan capital, I chose to stay at The ONE Barcelona, and it did not disappoint! This five-star boutique hotel is perfectly located between two of the city's most desirable neighborhoods: Eixample and Gràcia (the go-to area for Barcelona’s hip and trendy crowd).

Staying here, you’re just a short distance away from Barcelona’s main sights, including the Sagrada Familia cathedral, the Gothic Quarter, and Gaudí’s Parc Güell. If, like me, you have just a few days in Barcelona, this is the best place to be, so you don’t have to waste time commuting!

The ONE Hotel Barcelona includes 88 rooms across 10 room categories. It was designed by Jaime Beriestain and has a polished, luxurious aesthetic, with a strong art influence. Think midnight-blue furnishing, gold accents, spectacular marble floors, and impressive abstract works!

I stayed in the Deluxe Barcelona room with city views, which was equally as stunning as the rest of the hotel. The rooms here are bright and spacious (around 30m2), and some even have connecting doors, which is great for travelers visiting with family and friends. The king-size bed comes with Egyptian-cotton sheets and a choice of goose-down or hypoallergenic pillows – you’ll certainly sleep like a baby here!

The highlight of the hotel is its dark and moody Despacio Spa, where you can choose from a variety of treatments, like anti-aging facials, deep-tissue massages, and more, or simply relax in the sauna, pool, or relaxation area.

Furthermore, The ONE Barcelona also has a lush rooftop terrace with a pool of sky-blue water and truly mesmerizing views of the Mediterranean. This was my favorite spot to wind down after exploring!

Additional Facts About The ONE Barcelona:

  • Includes a state-of-the-art gym that’s open 24/7

  • Room service is available 24/7

  • Features two bars and one restaurant

  • Dog-friendly (furry friends up to 30 kg are welcome)

  • Offers turndown service every night

Barcelona Highlights: Things to See and Do

Brilliant museums, incredible restaurants, and marvelous Gaudí creations – Barcelona is a vibrant cultural center that lives up to its reputation. If you're wondering about the best things to do while you're there, I’ve put together the ultimate Barcelona bucket list.

Visit Sagrada Familia

There’s no attraction more synonymous with the Catalan capital than the illustrious Sagrada Familia. The construction of Gaudí’s most celebrated work of architecture began in 1882 and is ongoing to this day. With its 18 towers, intricate facades, and incredible symbolism, it’s like no other church in the world (in fact, it’s the tallest religious building in Europe). Currently, builders are expecting to finish the century-old construction in 2026.

I joined a guided tour, which I recommend to anyone visiting – this way, you get to learn more about the building and its architect.

Our Tip: If you want to visit the Sagrada Familia for free, do it during the Sunday Mass, which takes place every Sunday at 9 am.

Join a Culinary Tour

One of the best ways to explore the food scene in Barcelona is to join a gastronomic tour. There are plenty of options, but I chose the Barcelona Tapas & Wine Experience, and I couldn’t have been happier! If you’re seeking an authentic food experience in the city or are simply someone who wants to eat like a local, this is a ‘must-do’ activity.

Depending on the tour you choose, you might explore the trendy El Born neighborhood, discover local hangouts in Poble Sec, or try iconic flavors at Barcelona’s legendary food markets, like La Boqueria.

See a Flamenco Show

For an unforgettable evening in Barcelona, I highly recommend experiencing the Tablao de Carmen Flamenco Show with a Tasting Menu or Dinner. There are two showtimes to choose from, and you can elevate your night by selecting a tapas tasting menu, a full meal, or even a VIP dinner with wine pairing. We opted for the three-course dinner, and every bite was as memorable as the show itself!

The venue is set in the heart of Poble Espanyol (Spanish Village), so, before or after the show, you can take a tour through the open-air museum built for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition.

Visit Gaudí’s Creations

Before boarding our cruise, we took time to visit Casa Batlló, one of Antoni Gaudí’s most iconic creations, and it absolutely took our breath away. From its dreamlike façade adorned with colorful mosaics to the whimsical, nature-inspired interiors, every detail of this house showcases Gaudí’s genius and unique architectural vision. It was one of my Barcelona highlights!

According to the city’s Institute of Urban Landscape and Quality of Life, Barcelona is home to over 2,200 buildings that are either fully modernista or feature elements of the style.

If you’re eager to explore some lesser-known modernista gems, I recommend checking out Hotel Espanya, Casa Thomas, and Casa Planells – each one offering its own unique take on this artistic movement.

Taste Your Way Through Mercado de la Boqueria

The irresistible scent of calamari on an open grill. The mouth-watering gambas slick with aioli. The mountains of rainbow-colored vegetables (including tomatoes as large as your fist). If your chosen culinary tour doesn’t include a visit to Barcelona’s colorful markets, make sure to visit at least one of them anyway, as it’s the best way to throw yourself into Barcelona life.

Mercat de la Boqueria, the city’s most famous market, is open from 8 am to 8:30 pm, Monday to Saturday, but make sure to come here in the morning, when the food is fresh and crowds aren’t as big.

Keep an eye open for these treats:

  • Bacallà salat (dried cod)

  • Cargols (snails)

  • Calçots (spring onions with romesco sauce)

  • Jamon ibérico de Bellota (a special kind of ham that melts in the mouth!)

  • Catalonian olive oil

  • Dried wild mushrooms (great for risottos!)

Wander Around the Gothic Quarter

One of the city’s most historic neighborhoods is known for its network of narrow, winding streets that connect some of the most famous squares and monuments, including the Barcelona Cathedral.

For just a couple of euros, you can visit the 13th-15th-century masterpiece and admire the impressive combination of Romanesque, Gothic, and neo-Gothic styles in one building (plus, there’s a rooftop that offers lovely city views).

The Gothic Quarter also includes the lively Plaça Reial (the Royal Square), which is dotted with charming galleries, restaurants, and bars. You can also stop by the Carrer del Bisbe, the most photographed bridge in Barcelona.

Other Things to Do

Take a Park Güell Guided Tour

Named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984, this whimsical creation of Antoni Gaudí is one of the most unique parks in the world. Join a guided tour and enjoy its lush gardens along with sweeping views over Barcelona.

Enjoy a Beach Day

Beach in Barcelona

Barcelona’s sun-drenched beaches are just minutes from the city center. Barceloneta Beach is the most famous, but you’ll find quieter stretches further up the coast.

For a more upscale seaside vibe, spend your afternoon at Bastian Beach Barcelona or one of the trendy chiringuitos (beach bars) that line the shore – great for cocktails, music, and a front-row seat to the sunset.

Join a Wine Tasting

Did you know you can do wine tasting in Barcelona, as well? Take a day trip to the Penedès wine region or simply visit one of the local bars to learn more about Catalonia’s deep-rooted wine heritage.

Take a Day Trip to Montserrat or Costa Brava

Looking to explore beyond the city? You can head to Montserrat for stunning mountain views and a visit to the monastery, or spend the day in the idyllic Costa Brava (the turquoise waters and rugged cliffs will take your breath away). Both are just a short trip from Barcelona.

Visit Picasso’s Museum

No art lover’s trip to Barcelona is complete without a visit to the Picasso Museum, home to one of the world’s most extensive collections of the artist’s early works.

Where to Eat and Drink

Few cities in the world can rival Barcelona’s dining scene. In fact, in 2024, the Catalonian capital was home to both the best restaurant and bar in the world (according to the Conde Nast Traveler). So, safe to say, you’ll never be hungry or thirsty here!

Here are some of the places I enjoyed during my visit:

  • Golfo de Bizkaia Born: A cozy Basque spot in El Born.

  • Llamber: The perfect place to enjoy creative takes on Asturian and Catalan classics with a seriously good cocktail.

  • Bodega La Tinaja: This quaint little tapas bar feels like stumbling into someone’s old wine cellar – rustic, charming, and packed with flavor and atmosphere.

  • Bar Sauvage: If you’re craving something cool and different, this biker-themed cocktail bar nails the edgy vibe with bold drinks to match.

  • Mariposa Negra: A moody, tucked-away cocktail bar that’s perfect for a low-lit nightcap.

  • SIPS: Officially the #1 cocktail bar in the world (2024) – and for good reason! The cocktails are next-level, but definitely book ahead unless you want to wait in line.

  • Bobby’s Free Barber Shop: One of the coolest speakeasies in the city – disguised as a vintage barbershop, it opens into a hidden bar.

Final Thoughts

Best things to do in Barcelona

Barcelona is having a moment. There are not many places in the world that combine effortless style, a spectacular dining scene, and astonishing cultural riches. So, if you haven’t yet visited the city that’s famous for its modernista masterpieces, art-jammed museums, and bold neighborhoods, this is your sign to do it!  Three days weren’t nearly enough to soak in everything the bustling city has to offer, so I know I’ll be coming back.
