The Ultimate Canary Islands Travel Guide: Exploring Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura

Canary Islands travel guide

With haunting volcanoes, sweeping sandy dunes, unique landscapes, and guaranteed sunshine, there is a Canary Island for every adventurer! You can spend days enjoying Fuerteventura’s golden beaches, hiking through Gran Canaria’s mountainous interior, whale-watching, and doing so much more.

This October, I was invited to attend the European Travel Agent Forum to discover all that the Canary Islands have to offer. I spent 11 days exploring Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura – getting to know their landscapes, culture, and charm. Here’s a recap of my trip to spark your wanderlust and help you start dreaming about your own Canary Islands adventure!

Why Visit the Canary Islands

You wouldn’t be wrong to compare Spain’s Canary Islands to a tropical paradise.. Nestled in the North Atlantic Ocean, the archipelago of eight islands has long been a loved destination for surfers, scuba divers, windsurfers, and sunbathers. But the Canary Islands, especially Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, are as much about national parks and mesmerizing natural landscapes as they are about beaches.

While every Canary Island has its own character and offerings, Gran Canaria, the third-largest out of the bunch, is arguably the most diverse. Here, you’ll find stunning historical highlights, melodramatic mountain views, majestic rainforests, and, of course, plenty of water action!

Fuerteventura, on the other hand, often flies a little under the radar compared to its popular neighbors and is known for its more laid-back pace. But don’t think that means there’s no fun to be had! Fuerteventura is one of the best places in the world for outdoor adventures. The oldest of the Canary Islands, it was shaped by three massive volcanoes, creating a landscape where desert meets lush green oases and striking geological formations.

Accommodations

During my trip to Gran Canaria, I stayed in three different hotels. Here are my thoughts about each accommodation.

Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity

Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity

Located in the dusty hills of the south, this chic resort sits apart from the coastal hotels of Maspalomas. The property is spread across several buildings and feels almost surreal against the dramatic, raw backdrop. I stayed in the Triple Deluxe Room and loved how spacious it was! All rooms feature furnished balconies or terraces, while the bathrooms include luxurious tubs and walk-in rainfall showers – perfect after a long day of golfing.

Speaking of golf, this hotel mainly attracts golfers, thanks to its adjoining 18-hole and nine-hole courses (with plans to add nine more next year). But the other amenities are just as impressive. Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity offers seven outdoor pools and a huge Aloe Spa complete with a sauna, steam room, and oxygen room. If you stay for more than five days, you’ll even receive complimentary spa access!

Additional Suggestions

  • Remember to pre-schedule spa access!

  • The hotel has an app, where you can access schedules for the restaurant, pool, and activities.

While this countryside escape impressed me with its beautiful setting, excellent amenities, and delicious food, the service left me a little disappointed.

Hotel Faro

Located right beside the iconic Maspalomas Lighthouse on Blvd El Faro, this adults-only luxury boutique property blends elegance with fun. I would rate it a solid 4-star stay – it truly delivers on design, comfort, and atmosphere.

During my trip, I stayed in the Double Deluxe Room, and I highly recommend upgrading your room category for better views of the Atlantic and the famous dunes. The rooms are bright and modern, and I loved the thoughtful touches – from the complimentary beach bag to the nightly turndown service that makes you feel pampered.

The real highlight of the hotel is its location. If you plan to explore beyond Maspalomas, there’s even a taxi stand right outside the hotel, which is super convenient.

As for other amenities, the hotel features two pool areas — an oceanfront pool on the ground floor, and the real showstopper upstairs: the Blue Marlin Ibiza Rooftop, which includes two small infinity pools with breathtaking ocean views. The rooftop has a fun, upbeat vibe with DJs spinning on the weekends, and the cocktails are absolutely delicious. My personal favorite was the Strawberry Gin Basil Smash

Our tip: Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, the Blue Marlin Ibiza Rooftop is worth a visit – there’s a separate elevator for non-guests, so hotel residents can still enjoy their peace.

Additional Suggestions

  • The hotel has an app, where you can check the daily activity schedule, book experiences, order room-service, and more.

  • Don’t miss the rooftop on weekends – the sunset views are unreal!

  • Guests can start the day with an impressive breakfast spread that includes both buffet selections and freshly prepared à la carte dishes.

  • While there’s no spa on-site, guests can book treatments at the sister resort nearby or enjoy a relaxing massage at the in-house massage center.

  • There are no beach loungers directly managed by the hotel, but you can rent them through a third-party vendor.

Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia

Out of all three hotels I stayed in, Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia was my favorite – a true luxury oasis that feels worlds away from the busier resorts of Gran Canaria. This 5-star, German-owned Leading Hotels of the World property is designed for couples or friends looking to unwind in peace rather than chase entertainment.

I stayed in the Superior Room, one of the leading categories and absolutely loved it. The space was beautifully furnished, quiet, and opened up to lush garden views. While the crowd here tends to be older (50+), the ambiance is so calm and refined that I’d return in a heartbeat. There’s one heated outdoor pool, a small office with a computer and printer, and even a cozy library – everything feels intimate and personal. The spa is equally impressive, featuring a thalassotherapy pool, Finnish sauna, salt cave, cold plunge pool, and relaxation area (open from 3–8 p.m., though guests can enjoy the spa pool anytime).

Additional Suggestions

  • Don’t miss the four-course dinner experience – the menu changes daily, and the food is exceptional.

  • Spa access is available from 3-8pm, but you can enjoy the thalassotherapy pool anytime during the day.

  • You’ll receive an invite for cava on the terrace of the piano bar as a welcome gesture – a lovely way to start your stay.

  • Keep in mind that phone calls aren’t allowed in public areas (including the pool), which makes it the perfect place to truly disconnect.

The Best Things to Do in Gran Canaria

Visit the Maspalomas Dunes Reserve Lookout Point

Maspalomas Dunes

Start your adventure at the Maspalomas Dunes Reserve, one of the island’s most iconic natural wonders. From the lookout point, you’ll see miles of golden sands rolling toward the turquoise Atlantic. It almost feels like standing between a desert and the sea! Go early or at sunset for the best light (and photos!).

Explore Puerto de Mogán

Often called the ‘Little Venice’of Gran Canaria, Puerto de Mogán is a postcard-perfect harbor town with whitewashed houses, flower-draped balconies, and canals lined with boats. Spend the afternoon wandering its cobbled streets, browsing local boutiques, and enjoying fresh seafood by the marina.

Go On a Catamaran

Sailing the southern coast by catamaran is a must-do experience! Relax on deck with a drink in hand, stopping at hidden coves to swim and snorkel among tropical fish. It’s the perfect way to soak up Gran Canaria’s sunshine from the sea.

See Maspalomas Lighthouse

Another must-see sight in Gran Canaria is the Maspalomas Lighthouse – one of the island’s most recognizable landmarks. Climb up for panoramic ocean views or enjoy a leisurely walk along the beachfront promenade lined with shops and cafés.

Visit Agüimes

One of my favorite parts of the trip was visiting this charming inland village, which offers a glimpse of traditional island life with its colorful houses, narrow streets, and impressive church. If you visit during the local festivities for San Sebastián, you’ll get to experience its joyful carnival spirit firsthand.

Discover the Guayadeque Valley Natural Monument

Explore one of Gran Canaria’s most unique landscapes – a lush ravine filled with cave homes carved into volcanic rock. Don’t miss stopping at a cave restaurant for a traditional Canarian meal with a view.

Take a Walk to Montaña de Las Tierras

Just near Guayadeque, Montaña de Las Tierras is where you’ll still find locals living in caves carved into the mountain. The area feels wonderfully peaceful and untouched. I recommend stopping by Restaurante Tagoror, where you can dine inside the rock itself!

Hike the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria (Roque Nublo & Roque Bentayga)

The Canary Islands are a paradise for hiking lovers! If there’s one thing you should do during your trip, it’s exploring these dramatic volcanic peaks, part of a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. The trails reward you with breathtaking views over canyons and clouds, and Roque Nublo, specifically, is a must for sunset.

Visit Vegueta in Las Palmas

Craving a little dose of history? Make sure to visit Vegueta – the oldest neighborhood in Las Palmas. Simply wandering through its cobblestone streets is lovely as it is, but make sure to pop into the Casa de Colón museum to learn about the island’s connection to Christopher Columbus.

Other Fun Things to Do

Canary Islands guide
  • Rock climbing, bird watching, golf, and stargazing: Gran Canaria’s dramatic terrain and clear skies make it the perfect destination for outdoor adventures.

  • Go camel riding in the Maspalomas Dunes.

  • Take a buggy tour of the island: If you’re craving a bit of adrenaline (and incredible views), this is a fun alternative to discover Gran Canaria.

  • Participate in a volcano hike tour.

  • Go windsurfing on the east coast: Thanks to its steady trade winds, the island’s east coast is one of the best windsurfing spots in the world.

  • Walk the Camino de Gran Canaria: For something truly special, you can try to tackle the island’s own Camino – a pilgrimage route blessed by the Pope. The whole journey takes about a week and crosses forests, mountains, and charming villages.

The Best Things to Do in Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura guide

Visit Ajuy Caves

Formed during the Cretaceous period around 100 million years ago, the Ajuy Caves are the oldest geological site in the Canary Islands and a must-visit on your Fuerteventura trip! Throughout history, the caves have served many purposes – from storm shelters to pirate hideouts – but today, they’re protected and preserved as a natural monument.

Explore Betancuria

Betancuria Canary Islands

If you only have time to visit one place in the center of the island, it should be Betancuria. The Historical Villa and Historical Capital of the Canary Islands, tucked up in the mountains, is the perfect place to learn more about the island’s history.

Discover El Cotillo

You’ll often read that El Cotillo has more character than anywhere else on Fuerteventura. The former fishing village still has an authentic feel about it, despite it becoming a loved surfing destination in recent years. Come here for delicious food, a bit of history (make sure to see the Torre el Tostón), and breathtaking sea views!

See the Bayuyo Volcano

Most of Fuerteventura was formed as a result of volcanic eruptions five million years ago. When visiting the beautiful island, you have a unique opportunity to hike up what remains of this volcano and enjoy spectacular views of the northern part of the island (and other glorious volcanoes such as Calderón Hondo, Las Calderas, and Montaña Colorada). The entire journey is around four kilometers long, and takes one and a half hours.

Go to Corralejo Natural Park

Corralejo Natural Park is hands down the best place to experience the raw desert beauty of Fuerteventura. Stretching over 10 kilometers along the northeast coast, it’s a landscape of striking contrasts. Just imagine – endless white dunes meeting turquoise Atlantic waters in the north, and rugged volcanic terrain painted in reds and ochres to the south.

Other Fun Things to Do

  • Visit the Archaeological Museum and Church in Betancuria: If time allows, explore these places to learn about the island’s history and see beautiful architecture (the town closes early around 4 pm, so plan ahead!).

  • Go surfing or windsurfing: Fuerteventura is an excellent destination for both beginner and seasoned surfers.

  • Visit the Cheese Museum: Did you know Fuerteventura has a rich cheesemaking heritage? Here, you can sample the famous Majorero cheese made from local goat’s milk.

  • Relax at Sotavento beaches: Known for their golden sands and shallow turquoise lagoons, these beaches are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or simply relaxing.

Final Thoughts

Canary Islands guide

The Canary Islands sometimes undeservedly get a bad rep for soulless resorts and cheap package holidays. But I invite you to look beyond this outdated image. My trip to Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura proved that Spain’s sun-baked islands have something to offer for every kind of traveler. Where else can you experience an archipelago of endlessly varied landscapes, slow yet charming villages and plenty of outdoor adventures, while never being far from a dip in the ocean?
